helping pets in Japan

I love animals. We have a quirky cockatiel, a chatty parrot and one of the sweetest dogs in the world … according to his very biased owners. Our pets keep us busy and entertained. Jake – our lab-retriever rescue – came from the SPCA of Texas. We got him when he was only four months old and five pounds.

Jake is now 52 pounds and will be a year old in May. He still thinks he is a lap dog. I’m confident that if I ever become Oprah-rich, I’ll have to buy acres and acres of land (and dozens of animal lovers) to care for all the animals I’ll want to adopt.

Like thousands of others, I watched the YouTube video of the loyal dog in Sendai, Japan. This amazing dog survived the tsunami and remained at the side of its injured companion. I hope people will remember these voiceless creatures when they are choosing where to make donations.

Sendai is our international sister city. To show support for my sister and the pets in need there, I will donate 10 percent of my earnings from this weekend’s Deep Ellum Outdoor Market to the Search Dog Foundation. I’ll update this post with the donation amount after the market.

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who came out to visit and shop at the DEOM on Saturday! I’m making a donation of $15 to the Search Dog Foundation thanks to you.
